Whilst majestic mountains are often synonymous with a Kiwi adventure, there are also idyllic coastal paths to explore. Two such stunning tracks are located on the tranquil northern coast of the South Island - the Abel Tasman Coast Track and the Queen Charlotte Track. Unlike other parts of New Zealand, these trails can be enjoyed all year round.
Named after the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman who first sighted these glorious shores in 1642, the Abel Tasman National Park near Nelson is a beach lover’s paradise offering swimming, snorkelling, walking, kayaking and boating. Set within this picturesque national park, the 60 kilometre Abel Tasman Coast Track is one of the ten designated Great Walks of New Zealand. This scenic, gently undulating one-way track features a unique mix of forest and beach walking plus optional kayaking. This is a fantasy land of turquoise bays, golden sand beaches, dramatic rocky headlands and lush emerald forests filled with ferns and birdlife.
Nearby the popular Queen Charlotte Track near Picton offers unrivalled views across the acclaimed Marlborough Sounds waterways. This 71 kilometre trail runs between Queen Charlotte Sound and Kenepuru Sound. It leads walkers through native forests and along a series of ridgeline paths overlooking the surrounding network of startling blue bays, inlets and coves. Astounding panoramas abound. To complete the picture, there is a variety of waterfront accommodation serving superb locally sourced food and wine.
There is an array of tour operators and itineraries for both the Abel Tasman Coast Track and the Queen Charlotte Track - guided, self-guided, luxury accommodation, comfortable accommodation, camping, kayaking and boat transfers.
