Walk Overview
The Marlborough Sounds is an extensive maze of waterways located at the northern end of New Zealand’s South Island. It is made up of three Sounds - the Queen Charlotte Sound, the Kenepuru Sound and the Pelorus Sound. The spectacular 70 kilometre Queen Charlotte Track stretches between the Queen Charlotte Sound and the Kenepuru Sound and is the perfect way to explore this fascinating region.
This intricate network of inlets is renowned for its contrasting landscapes comprising turquoise coves, white sandy shorelines, pristine native forests and mountain ridge lines overlooking the myriad of bays. Seemingly unchanged by time, the lush forests feature ancient rim trees, punga tree ferns, beech trees, native orchids and abundant birdlife. The trail climbs from shoreline to ridge lines which afford panoramic vistas. A particular highlight is the stunning view atop Kenepuru Saddle which surveys both Queen Charlotte Sound and Kenepuru Sound.
The track is accessed by boat from Picton which is the largest town in the Marlborough Sounds. The track starts at historic Ship Cove, then follows almost the entire length of the Queen Charlotte Sound and finishes at Anakiwa. Whilst the trail is not steep, it is long. Some days can be challenging due to the distance covered. However, thanks to an efficient system of local water transport services, some shortcuts can be taken and luggage is readily transferred.
There are several tour operators offering guided or self guided tours in the region. They will organise all necessary water transport, luggage transfers, accommodation and meals. Some also offer sea kayaking options and visits to the Motuara Island bird sanctuary. There are various itineraries ranging from “highlights” tours to walking the entire track. Walkers can also choose from a range of accommodation options including comfortable lodges, waterfront locations and luxury resorts. Local restaurants showcase New Zealand produce, fresh seafood and the region’s famous wines.
We can help you choose and book a walking holiday that best suits your needs and your budget. It is important to note that this track is very popular and must be booked at least 6-9 months in advance, especially in the busiest months of February and March. We can also assist with transport, accommodation and travel insurance.
