Sydney Royal National Park

The attraction of walking in the Royal National Park

Despite being a major international city, Sydney is home to spectacular harbour and coastal walking trails. Many of these trails lie in protected national park areas, thus protecting these precious natural reserves from man-made development. The Royal National Park is one such walkers’ oasis.

The park is located less than an hour’s drive south from the centre of Sydney and can be accessed easily by car or public transport. The Royal National Park is one of the oldest national parks in the world having been established in 1879. It comprises 15,000 hectares of pristine coastal bushland and showcases a spectacular stretch of rugged sandstone cliffs, sandy beaches and lush vegetation overlooking the mighty Pacific Ocean.

The terrain and vegetation within the park are varied. In addition to the spectacular coastline, there are quiet inland rivers and picturesque swimming lagoons. The colourful coastal heath is punctuated by groves of eucalyptus trees and rainforest. All this wonderful vegetation attracts a wealth of birdlife and wildlife including echidnas, wallabies and wedge tailed eagles.
