Walk Overview
Described by many as the ultimate Sydney coastal walk, the Sydney Royal National Park Coast Track has all the spectacular attractions of sandy Pacific Ocean beaches and towering sandstone cliffs, minus the Sydney crowds and development. Located in the Royal National Park, just south of Sydney, this memorable walk offers a wonderful mix of dramatic headlands, countless lookouts with immense views, pristine beaches, sand dunes, waterfalls and secluded swimming coves.
The walk starts at Bundeena and heads south toward Otford. It traces the coastal escarpments with colourful native heath growing right to the edge of the cliffs. Vegetation is varied and includes banksia, wattle, Spring wildflowers, cabbage tree palm groves, rainforest and bush eucalypt forest. This area is home to abundant birdlife and wildlife such as swamp wallabies and echidnas. Between May and November, there is also a good chance of spotting migrating humpback whales off the coast.
Some areas of the walk are particularly popular thanks to Instagram. The sculptured rectangular blocks of Wedding Cake Rock resemble a slice of pure white wedding cake perched dramatically above the crashing surf waves below. The Figure 8 Pools are spectacular turquoise rockpools carved out of a sea-level rock ledge, south of Burning Palms Beach. Eagle Rock Lookout offers stunning views of the forty metre Eagle Rock waterfall with scenic cliff-base cave below. Whilst these well-known areas can get busy, the rest of the walk is relatively uncrowded.
Aside from sensational walking terrain, the Sydney Royal National Park Coast Track provides many beautiful swimming opportunities at some of Sydney’s best beaches and secluded inland lagoons. At Marley and Wattamolla, you can choose between ocean swimming or more protected swimming in the calm waters of the picturesque lagoon.
The walk is graded moderate to challenging as the southern section contains steep sections between Garie Beach and Otford. We can help you book a walking holiday along the Sydney Royal National Park Coast Track and assist with transport, accommodation plus travel insurance.
