Scenic Rim Region

The attraction of walking in the Scenic Rim Region

South-east Queensland’s Scenic Rim is a spectacular arc of mountain ranges, forested valleys, rain forest gullies, ridges and escarpments that stretches for over 100 km from just inland of Surfers Paradise. Main Range National Park and the Mount Barney National Park are located on the impressive western part of the scenic rim which is easily accessed from Brisbane. The West Scenic Rim region offers spectacular walking that can be experienced on day trips or, more desirably, through longer immersion via the simplicity of a tent or the luxury of high-end accommodation.

The West Scenic Rim region falls within the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, an area that was declared world heritage in 1994 due to the vast tracts of pristine, sub-tropical rainforest and the diverse flora and fauna that naturally accompanies such terrain. A distinctive feature of this area are the extensive escarpments that rise dramatically above less precipitous forested ridges. These escarpments are the remnants of a substantial volcano that was active some 20 million years ago. The rainforest occupies the gullies that lie between the ridges and in the protected valleys.

Mount Barney National Park is home to picturesque bushland, tranquil streams and waterfalls. A particular highlight in this area are the stunning Lower Portals rock pools which feature deep, crystal clear waters surrounded by dramatic boulders.

Main Range National Park offers excellent mountaintop vistas. The summits of Mount Mitchell and Mount Cordeaux lie on either side of Cunningham’s Gap and reward walkers with exceptional views of the rugged landscape of the scenic rim including the impressive Moogerah Peaks and Mount Barney.

A walking holiday in the West Scenic Rim region enables walkers to see a mosaic of native vegetation such as the lush rainforests, the eucalypt forests and the heath covering cliffs and rocky outcrops. The breathtaking views from ancient volcanic plateaus and mountain ridges have also helped to establish this area as a popular walking destination. Photo opportunities abound!
