Mornington Peninsula

The attraction of walking on the Mornington Peninsula

The Mornington Peninsula is Victoria’s oldest holiday playground. The dual attractions of the peaceful, turquoise-blue Bay beaches on the one side and the wild Bass Strait “back-beaches” on the other drew holidaymakers from as early as the 1880’s. Today, these attractions still entice but so do art galleries, wineries, golf courses, hot springs, dining destinations and walking trails!

Mornington Peninsula holds historic interest for a number of other reasons. Sorrento was the location of Victoria’s first European settlement, established in 1803. Further out on the Peninsula, towards its tip at Point Nepean, Victoria’s Quarantine Station operated for over 100 years (and is now open to the public). Point Nepean also houses Fort Nepean, a network of fortifications, gun emplacements and barracks built to protect the entrance to Port Phillip.

Much of the Mornington Peninsula has been cleared, but there is still enough natural vegetation for some quality bushwalking. Mornington Peninsula National Park, Point Nepean National Park and Arthurs Seat State Park provide the choicest locations. The Mornington Peninsula NP and the Point Nepean NP stretch the length of the “back beaches” that run from Cape Schanck to Point Nepean and provide almost constant spectacular ocean views.

Walking on the Mornington Peninsula won’t provide you with a wilderness experience, but it does afford abundant evidence of the power and beauty of nature. Coupled with the history and amenities of the Mornington Peninsula, it’s a very inviting proposition for walkers.
