Marlborough Sounds
The attraction of walking in the Marlborough Sounds region
Marlborough Sounds is an intricate network of waterways covering 1,500 kilometres of the South Island’s northern coastline. This scenic maze of sheltered bays and secluded inlets is formed from a collection of ancient sunken river valleys with forested mountains plunging dramatically into the water. The area comprises three main bodies of water - Queen Charlotte Sound, Kenepuru Sound and Pelorus Sound.
With its protected waterways, sandy beaches and lush vegetation, Marlborough Sounds is an outdoor adventure paradise. In addition to stunning walking trails, visitors can choose from a range of activities such as kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkelling, sailing, boating and mountain biking. There are also boat tours which are an excellent way to explore the full extent of the Sounds including wildlife sanctuaries established on several islands.
Aside from outdoor activities, the Marlborough region is world famous for its winegrowing (particularly sauvignon blanc) and its fresh seafood. There are many fun ways to explore the local wine and food culture. Marlborough Sounds offers a range of accommodation options including some memorable waterside lodges and resorts set in idyllic locations.
One of the best multi-day walks in the Marlborough Sounds is the Queen Charlotte Track.
