South Australia

South Australia’s walking gems are are less well-known than some of the premier walks of other states. Local and state authorities have been slower to recognise the tourism potential of marketed, multi-day walks. That’s changing as evidenced by recent developments on Kangaroo Island and the Fleurieu Peninsula.

South Australia is well-endowed with National Parks and other protected conservation parks. These areas play host to numerous walks that feature fascinating geological formations, unique vegetation, native wildlife and birdlife and abundant flora.

South Australia is famous for its wine and some walks are based in the vineyard regions. These walks provide an enticing mix of picturesque countryside and attractive villages complete with museums, art galleries and cafes.

Other trails provide more of a wilderness experience such as the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail that features pristine beaches, cliffs, unusual rock formations, caves and abundant wildlife.

Memorable coastal paths are also found on the Yorke Peninsula and the Fleurieu Peninsula. These peninsulas are a haven for seals, dolphins, whales, wildlife and keen surfers! There are several historic seaside towns on the Fleurieu Peninsula that are good ‘add-on’s to a walking holiday.

Then there’s the Flinders Ranges and the wondrous Wilpena Pound. Walks in this region take hikers along ancient indigenous pathways, as well as the northern portion of the epic Heysen Trail.

Some of the best walking regions in South Australia are set out below

Kangaroo Island

Australia’s third largest island is akin to a natural wildlife sanctuary. With more than a third of the island protected as conservation or national park and being free of feral animals, it’s easy to see why. The remote western end, home to the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail, has recovered magnificently from the 2019-20 fires.

Fleurieu Peninsula

The Fleurieu Peninsula offers a true wilderness experience where the mighty Southern Ocean is your constant companion. This area provides a wonderful mix of rugged coastline together with a densely vegetated hinterland brimming with wildlife. Here you will find pristine beaches, tranquil rivers and secluded waterfalls.

Flinders Ranges

The Flinders Ranges is the largest mountain range in South Australia and is significant in terms of indigenous culture and geological history. The landscape here is ancient, remote and dramatic. Wilpena Pound crater is the star attraction. However, the area is teeming with imposing rock formations and red ochre mountain ranges.
