Fleurieu Peninsula

The attraction of walking on the Fleurieu Peninsula

Despite being located a short 84km south of Adelaide, the Fleurieu Peninsula provides an opportunity to explore untouched, rugged coastal scenery and secluded forests full of wildlife. This area forms some of the most spectacular parts of Australia’s longest walking trail, the iconic Heysen Trail.

There is a lot on offer on this peninsula including the well known McLaren Vale wine region, wild Southern Ocean surf beaches, hidden coves, dramatic cliffs, local farmers’ markets, lush rolling hills, colourful wildflowers, secluded waterfalls, conservation parks and picturesque towns. The mighty Southern Ocean fringes the peninsula. It provides a panoramic backdrop to the surrounding wilderness as well as a dose of invigorating fresh sea air.

The Deep Creek Conservation Park is the largest portion of remaining natural vegetation on the Fleurieu Peninsula. The native wildlife in the dense forests includes kangaroos, echidnas and over 100 species of birds. There are many scenic highlights in the park such as Blow Hole Beach, Deep Creek Waterfall, Deep Creek Valley and the ocean views atop Tapanappa Ridge.

There is a range of accommodation options on the peninsula and at various locations within the Deep Creek Conservation Park. The peninsula offers sensational regional produce including smoked meats, venison, seafood, sourdough breads, artisan cheeses, fresh fruit and vegetables. Such delicacies can be enjoyed in the wide array of local cafes, restaurants and friendly country pubs.

The South Australian government has announced a six million dollar investment in the creation of The Great Southern Ocean Walk which will upgrade this section of the Heysen Trail. This will create a 3 - 5 day walk with campsites connecting Deep Creek and Newland Head Conservation Parks as well as Granite Island Recreation Park.

In the meantime, the Fleurieu Peninsula already offers scenic day and multi-day walks. There are currently a few different walking holidays available in this region.

One of the best multi-day walks on the Fleurieu Peninsula is the first section of the Heysen Trail between Cape Jervis and Victor Harbor.
