Bay of Fires

The attraction of walking at the Bay of Fires

The Bay of Fires lies on Tasmania’s northeast coast between Binalong Bay and Eddystone Point and was named by Captain Tobias Furneaux in 1773 when he noticed numerous fires along the coast, indicating that the land was populated. The landscape here is an artist’s dream: turquoise waters, white sands beaches, densely vegetated hinterland and orange lichen covered granite rocks.

The beauty and seclusion of this area, as well as its location on Tasmania’s sheltered east coast, is a powerful combination and acts as a potion to unwind and relax.

The Bay of Fires Conservation Area, and its immediate northern neighbour Mount William National Park, are located 190km northeast of Launceston. The Bay of Fires itself is divided into three sections: the northern end (Eddystone Point to Ansons Bay), the middle section (Ansons Bay) and the southern end (Ansons Bay to Binalong Bay).

In addition to the numerous secluded beaches and inlets, there are interesting rocky gullies to explore. Aside from walking, popular activities include swimming, snorkelling, diving, surfing, fishing and birdwatching.

Campsites are located in the southern and middle sections of the Bay of Fires. Other accommodation options are available in the coastal towns of Binalong Bay and St Helens which are located at the southern end of the conservation area. Accommodation in Mount William National Park is confined to camping.
