Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast forms the southern shoreline of the Sorrento peninsula. It lies in southern Italy, about 50 kilometres south of Naples. Pompeii is even closer, being only 30 kilometres away.

The outer edges of the Amalfi Coast are generally taken to be Vietri sul Mare in the east and Positano in the west. Between those extremities there’s about 55 kilometres of stunning coastline, most of which is bordered by steep and rugged hills that plunge seawards. The hills provide panoramic views of the glittering Tyrrhennian Sea.

The focus of attention for walkers is the stretch of coastline from Amalfi to Positano and the hills surrounding that part of the coast. Ancient walking paths and stairways give access to terraced slopes hosting lemon and olive groves and vineyards. Farmhouses perch in precarious locations. Well-vegetated forests share the slopes and fill the narrow valleys. The paths also connect charming villages such as Ravello, Atrani, Bomerano and Praiano.

There are many opportunities for multi-day walks on the Amalfi Coast. There’s no single classic route that walkers take, but most will wish to include the Sentiero Degli Dei (Path of the Gods) on their walking route. This eight kilometre path runs between Bomerano and Nocelle and is jam-packed with the delights of this region. People also tend to walk east to west, finishing in Positano (although a common addition to a multi-day walking itinerary involves a ferry from Positano to Capri and an additional day or two of walking or relaxing on that wondrous island).

One multi-day walk possibility on the Amalfi Coast is described in more detail below.
