Amalfi Coast Walk Overview
The Amalfi Coast forms the southern shoreline of the Sorrento peninsula. It lies in southern Italy, about 50 kilometres south of Naples. It’s also south of Pompeii, which is only 30 kilometres away. The outer edges of the Amalfi Coast are generally taken to be Vietri sul Mare in the east and Positano in the west. For walkers, however, the focus of attention is the stretch of coastline from Amalfi to Positano and the hills surrounding that part of the coast.
Between Amalfi and Positano there’s about 30 kilometres of stunning coastline, most of which is bordered by steep and rugged hills that plunge seawards. The hills provide panoramic views of the glittering Tyrrhennian Sea, as well as a smorgasbord of limestone cliffs, terraced gardens and vineyards, farms and forests.
A six day walking itinerary that starts in (or around) Amalfi and heads west to Positano is as follows:
Day 1: From a base of Ravello, Atrani or Amalfi, a circular day walk that links those towns plus Torre dello Ziro. An excellent introduction to the Amalfi Coast landscape and views, with an opportunity to visit magnificent landscaped gardens. Approximately 12 km.
Day 2: A second circular day walk from the same base as chosen for Day 1. This walk takes you into the nature reserve located in Valle delle Ferriere and features dramatic, vertical limestone cliffs. Using the bus to Scala to shorten, the walk is approximately 11 km.
Day 3: Walk from Amalfi to Praiano. The trail fluctuates between the coastline and the terraced hills above. A highlight is the fjord of Furore. Walk can be demanding in warm weather, but there’s a bus option that allows day to be abridged. Without bus, approximately 13 km.
Day 4: A circular walk from Praiano that incorporates the valley of Praia and the first section of the Sentiero Degli Dei (Path of the Gods). Approximately 9 km.
Day 5: Walk from Praiano to Positano. Rejoin the Path of the Gods and follow to its end at Nocelle. Continue to the village of Montepertuso before descending to vibrant and charming Positano. Approximately 11 km.
Day 6: There are two very appealing day walk alternatives from Positano. First, there is a circular walk from Montepertuso (accessed by bus) that provides views over both the Gulf of Salerno and the Gulf of Naples. The other alternative is a ferry to Capri where walks visit Roman ruins and provide views of stunning coastal rock features.
This is a sample walk itinerary that knits together a range of the region’s highlights. Many variations can be made to it and obviously it can be abridged or extended. One common extension is to include a night or two on Capri which is often referred to as a microcosm of the entire Amalfi Coast.
