Wilsons Promontory National Park
The attraction of walking at Wilsons Prom
It’s a bold statement, but “The Prom” is probably the most loved of Victoria’s walking destinations. Legions of Victorians experienced their first taste of overnight walking at the Prom and as a result enjoy a life-long emotional bond with the region. It’s easy to see why - rugged mountains, virgin bushland, intricate coastline, boulder-strewn headlands, white sand beaches and, perhaps above all, the splendid isolation that comes with a genuine promontory.
The southernmost tip of Wilsons Promontory is the southernmost tip of mainland Australia and the soaring cliffs that rise from the ocean in this region make it a spectacular destination for a walk. The Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse is located here, on a massive basalt outcrop. From the lighthouse, you can gaze out over the often wild seas of the Bass Strait. Periodically, ships and yachts will hurry past, thankful to be around the turning point and on a direct path to Melbourne or Sydney.
The entire 60,000 square kilometre promontory is national park and has been since 1904. Being a promontory, and having been protected from development for so long, it’s as pristine as anywhere that’s only three hours drive from a major city. The Prom is home to many animals including kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, seals and approximately 180 species of birds.
There are no townships within the Park but at Tidal River, located about two-thirds of the way down the Prom on the west coast, there is a national park visitors’ centre and national park operated accommodation.
