Victorian Alpine National Park

The attraction of walking in the Victorian Alpine National Park

To the surprise of the rest of the world, Victoria and New South Wales have true alpine country and it provides a wealth of opportunities to walkers of all descriptions. The Great Dividing Range that runs down Australia’s east coast enters Victoria in the north east and extends for hundreds of kilometres into the heart of Victoria.

The peaks and sub-alpine woodlands and grasslands are known collectively as the High Country. A rich vein of Australian bush folklore and legend derives from High Country feats and experiences.

At 646,000 hectares, the Victorian Alpine National Park is Victoria’s largest National Park. It contains Victoria’s highest mountains, Mt Bogong (1986m), Mt Feathertop (1922m), Mt Nelse (1893m), Mt Loch (1887m) and Mt Hotham (1862m), as well as the magnificent sub-alpine Bogong High Plains. At the Victoria/New South Wales border, the Victorian Alpine National Park meets and merges into the Kosciuszko National Park, making a whopping alpine wilderness region of over 1.3 million hectares.

The main township entry points to the Victorian Alpine National Park are Mansfield (in the south west), Bright, Harrietville, Mt Beauty and Omeo. Mansfield is about three hours drive from Melbourne, while the other towns are in the vicinity of four to four and a half hours drive. Settlements in the Park itself are mainly associated with the alpine resorts of Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Mt Buller.

The higher regions of the National Park are usually snow covered from early June to November, so the walking season is early November to late May. During this period, the area opens up to walking and other adventure activities, including mountain-bike riding.
