Julian Alps and Triglav National Park Trails

Overview

The best alpine walking in Slovenia lies in the north-west of the country. This region is home to the spectacular Triglav National Park, Slovenia’s largest protected area and only national park. The Julian Alps lie in the heart of the Triglav National Park. This mountain range is the highest of Slovenia’s mountain ranges and is also very accessible, thanks to a number of welcoming gateway towns and villages such as Kranjaska Gora, Bovec, Stara Fuzina and Ribcev Laz.

In addition to the impressive alpine terrain, Triglav National Park features other examples of breathtaking natural beauty including remote lush valleys, tranquil woodlands and rugged rock gorges. There are also several glacial lakes, rivers and waterfalls whose startlingly beautiful waters range in colour from emerald green through to aquamarine and turquoise blue. The stars of the show include Lake Bohinj, Lake Bled, Soca River and Savica Waterfall.

Slovenia is a relatively small European country, hence walking distances are manageable. Over the years, a multitude of walking trails have been established and maintained throughout the country. All standards of walking are catered for.

The popular Juliana Trail circuit walk was developed in 2019 to showcase the Julian Alps and the Triglav National Park. The track extends to 270 kilometres and can be divided into 16 stages (approximately 17 kilometres/4-5 walking hours each). This marvellous track covers mostly flat terrain along river valleys and through forests, whilst also affording impressive views of the surrounding alps including Mount Triglav. Given the length of the trail, it is possible to choose walking holidays which focus upon particular sections and highlights of the track.

Another wonderful walking option in northwest Slovenia is the renowned Alpe-Adria Trail which covers 750 kilometres through Austria (north of Slovenia), Slovenia and Italy (west of Slovenia). The whole trail is divided into 43 stages (approximately 20 kilometres/6-8 hours each). It starts at Mount Grossglockner in the Austria’s Carinthian alpine region and finishes at Muggia in Italy’s Gulf of Trieste on the Adriatic Sea. Eight of the Alpe-Adria’s stages traverse the heart of the Julian Alps and the Triglav National Park. Highlights include Kranjaska Gora mountain village, Vrsic mountain pass, Trenta Valley, Soca Gorge, Soca River, Boca Waterfall (Slovenia’s largest waterfall), views atop Kolovrat mountain ridge, regional cheese tasting at Kuhinja alpine dairy farms and traditional hospitality in lively Bovec village.
