The Tarkine
The attraction of walking in the Tarkine
The Tarkine is a wilderness area covering a vast 447,000 hectares in north-west Tasmania. Less known and less frequented than some of Tasmania’s other wilderness areas, the Tarkine features the largest cool temperate rainforest in the Southern Hemisphere. Walking through this ancient, untouched rainforest provides an opportunity to immerse yourself in pristine nature. The forest is home to abundant wildlife and many types of trees including myrtles, Huon pines, leatherwoods, giant ferns and eucalypts.
Within the rainforest there are many stunning waterfalls to explore. Philosopher Falls is a picturesque multi-tier waterfall surrounded by dense rainforest. Waratah Falls is located in the centre of the historic tin mining town of Waratah. Dip Falls is very dramatic as it cascades over hexagonal basalt columns formed from cooling volcanic rock. The stunning Montezuma Falls are the highest falls in Tasmania.
There are wonderful mountain summit vistas for walkers to enjoy including from Mt Murchison, Mt Donaldson and Mt Farrell. The Tarkine also features pristine rivers such as the Arthur River, the Whyte River and the Huskisson River. A cruise along the Pieman River leads to the rugged coastline with rocky headlands and huge surf driven by the westerly winds known as the Roaring Forties.
