The Sapphire Coast and Beowa National Park

The attraction of walking along the Sapphire Coast and in the Beowa National Park

The Sapphire Coast is the southern-most stretch of New South Wales’ coast. It runs from Bermagui in the north for about 140 km’s down to the Victorian border. It is renowned for the sapphire blue colour of its Pacific Ocean waters, coastal forests, picture-perfect beaches and temperate climate.

The region is well endowed with state forests, nature reserves and national parks. Amongst these, Beowa National Park is a standout. In Australian terms, this park is not large (approximately 10,000 hectares), but it includes 45 km’s of rugged coastline interspersed with idyllic, quiet beaches and a hinterland rich with diverse vegetation.

Beowa National Park is divided into two sections by the coastal town of Eden. Eden is an attractive and historic town. It overlooks Twofold Bay, a magnificent, deep water natural harbour. Twofold Bay led to the establishment of Eden as a whaling station in the 1820’s. Subsequently, due to the quality of the harbour and Eden’s location half way between Sydney and Melbourne, Eden was at one time considered as a site for Australia’s national capital.

Eden is a 6 - 7 hour drive from each of Melbourne and Sydney. It can also be reached by flying to Merimbula and then a 30 minute drive south.
