French Pyrenees

The Pyrenees mountain range is one of Europe’s greatest wilderness areas. This untamed mountainous region is covered with spectacular walking trails and some of the finest natural beauty spots in France.

Straddling the border between France and Spain, the Pyrenees reach altitudes above 3,000 metres and extend from the Atlantic ocean in the west to the Mediterranean Sea in the east. This is a region of majestic mountain peaks, rugged cliffs, turquoise lakes, picturesque waterfalls, deep valleys, alpine meadows, diverse wildlife and traditional villages.

Some of the most stunning scenery is found in the Parc National des Pyrenees in the Hautes Pyrenees section. The park is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Cirque du Gavarnie. This astounding natural ampitheatre was traditionally used as a resting place by pilgrims walking to Santiago de Compostela.

Walking in the Pyrenees alpine region provides both mental and physical rewards. Aside from the classic mountain countryside, there is fascinating mountain culture to experience in the picturesque villages together with delicious regional cuisine and wine. The walking season runs from late May to the middle of October.
