Walk Overview
This is a peaceful walk following the River Barrow along quiet towpaths, riverside roads and walking paths. The river Barrow is Ireland’s second longest river and flows south eventually meeting the Celtic Sea at Waterford. The river was made navigable in the 1700’s through the construction of a series of locks.
The Barrow Way starts in Robertstown, 45 kilometres west of Dublin (although some people start in Dublin, using canal paths to get to Robertstown). It finishes at the 7th century Monastery of St Mullins.
The walk passes through plenty of towns and villages, meaning food and lodgings are readily obtainable and your itinerary can remain flexible. Some of the appealing towns and villages include Athy, Carlow, Graiguenamanagh and Borris.
