Rhine Valley

The Rhine Valley is home to one of the world’s great rivers, the Rhine River. It is an area associated with significant historical events and serves as an important transport route. The valley is divided into sections including the renowned Middle Rhine Valley which stretches between Bingen and Koblenz.

The Middle Rhine Valley region is also known as the “Romantic Rhine Valley” because its natural beauty and architecture have inspired many writers, composers and artists. Walkers in the Rhine Valley are continuously treated to outstanding vistas - hilltop castles and ruins, steep terraced vineyards, rolling hillsides, scenic woodlands, towering cliffs, dramatic rock formations and traditional riverside villages.

Walking trails in this region are well signposted and maintained. Hikers are also greatly assisted by access to excellent train and river cruise connections. The walking season typically runs between March and October.

The Rheinsteig is the oldest and best-known of the multi-day walks in the region. It is a 320 kilometre trail which can be undertaken in various stages. There are also many other established multi-day walks in the Rhine Valley catering to a variety of hiking standards.
