Nitmiluk National Park

The attraction of walking in the Nitmiluk National Park

The Nitmiluk National Park provides walkers with a unique opportunity to step back in time. Traditionally, this area was crisscrossed by ancient Aboriginal hunting and travelling routes. Indigenous travellers sought shelter in the many rock caves and created striking rock art with the local ochres.

This is the land of the Jawoyn people and their spiritual dreaming stories. The sandstone landscape is dominated by a network of thirteen majestic rock gorges, the most famous being the Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge. Another highlight are the panoramic vistas afforded atop the Arnhem Land escarpment plateau. The local sunrises, sunsets and starry nights are all spectacular.

There is a rugged and harsh beauty to the terrain in the Nitmiluk National Park. The weather sculpted gorges feature whispering winds and shady sanctuaries from the heat. Trees line the creek beds and steep waterfalls tumble from the towering cliffs. Thankfully, there are many picturesque swimming waterholes which offer relief from the tropical climate.
