Happy 732nd Birthday Switzerland!

On the 1st of August each year, Switzerland celebrates Swiss National Day. The day commemorates the founding of Switzerland in 1291, meaning this year is the mountainous kingdom’s 732nd birthday.

In 1291, three cantons came together to form a loose alliance. Today, 26 cantons make up the Swiss Confederation and the population has increased to about 9 million. Most of that population lives in the less mountainous Swiss Plateau area that includes the major cities of Bern, Geneva, Lausanne and Zurich.

Swiss National Day is celebrated throughout the country, but if you’re lucky enough to be in the Swiss Alps on 1 August you’ll be treated to alphorn blowing and flag throwing by enthusiastic locals dressed in traditional costume. Many alpine villages hold street parades with marching bands and bell-ringing. Regional food and wine specialties are on offer and the day often concludes with fireworks and mountain-top bonfires.

A visit to the Swiss Alps is always a mouth-watering proposition. If your visit covers 1 August, it’s going to have the added attraction of Swiss National Day traditions, festivities and patriotic fervour.
