New South Wales Invests in Great Walks
New South Wales’ recent State Budget confirmed the Government’s on-going push to catch other Australian States in the multi-day walk segment of the eco-tourism market. The Budget allocated substantial funds to the creation of four ‘Great Walks’ over the next few years.
We already knew about three of those:
The Snowies Alpine Walk - a 55 km, four day walk that will link the alpine resorts of Guthega, Charlotte Pass, Perisher and Lake Crackenback. Two of the four stages of this walk have been completed and the walk is expected to be finished in 2023.
The Great Southern Walk - a 59 km, five day trail south of Sydney, linking the Illawarra escarpment, the Royal National Park and the Kamay Botany Bay National Park.
The Wollemi Great Walk - a six day walk between Wollemi National Park and the Gardens of Stone National Park.
The fourth - the Dorrigo Escarpment Great Walk - was announced with the Budget. It is to be a four day walk through the Gondwana rainforest in Dorrigo National Park. Dorrigo National Park is in the Northern Tablelands, approximately 65 km inland from Coffs Harbour.
Each of the four Great Walks is to include eco-cabins, new camping areas and new or upgraded tracks. In the case of the Dorrigo Escarpment Great Walk, a new rainforest discovery centre and a hanging boardwalk will be constructed at the start of the walk.
