Margaret River Region

The attraction of walking in the Margaret River region

The Margaret River region boasts a lush, green landscape edged by wild Indian Ocean beaches. Located 270km south of Perth, this region is perhaps best known for its world class wineries, craft breweries and gourmet food producers. However, there is also abundant scenic beauty to attract nature lovers and walkers.

The rugged coastline features dramatic sea cliffs, coastal heathlands, sand dunes, surf breaks and pristine white sand beaches. The mighty ocean waves have sculpted various offshore rock formations such as the Canal Rocks and Sugarloaf Rock. The historic lighthouses at Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin offer tours and both serve as important reminders of the dangers of this coastline.

The spectacular Leeuwin Naturaliste National Park also encompasses inland forests, rivers and bushland. The Boranup Forest lies between Margaret River and Augusta and is home to towering Karri trees, some over 50 metres tall.

This region is also renowned for its stunning underground limestone cave system. Lake Cave contains a permanent lake and an extremely unique “suspended table” stalactite formation. Nearby the Jewel Cave displays the longest stalactites in a tourist cave in the world. Mammoth Cave contains ancient mega fauna fossils.
