Kosciuszko National Park

The attraction of walking in Kosciuszko National Park

Kosciuszko National Park forms part of the Australian Alps and is home to Australia’s highest peak, Mount Kosciuszko as well as the Snowy Mountains and the Snowy River. In winter, it’s a snow sports destination, but in summer the Park offers world class alpine hiking. The park covers an area of 6,900 square kilometres and is situated in the south east corner of New South Wales, 354 km southwest of Sydney.

The majestic mountain summits and ridges afford exhilarating views of the alpine surrounds including glacial lakes and valleys, dramatic granite outcrops, heathland and waterfalls. In spring and summer, the open high plains are covered in colourful wildflowers punctuated by clusters of snow gum. Further down, on the steep slopes, eucalyptus forests dominate.

Accommodation is plentiful and varied in the Kosciuszko National Park. The High Country is dotted with campsites and historic huts. The alpine villages offer a range of lodges, hotels and historic cottages. The larger towns of Cooma, Tumut and Jindabyne lie just outside and service the park.
