Karst Region, Wine Region and Coastal Trails
Overview
Whilst many hikers focus upon the alpine terrain in the north-west of Slovenia, the south-west also offers many rewarding walking options. South-west Slovenia is criss-crossed with a maze of inter-connecting walking trails, enabling walkers to thoroughly explore this fascinating world of Karst rock formations, fertile wine valleys and Adriatic coastline.
Landscapes in the south-west are varied and often set against the backdrop of the northern Alps. There is a marvellous mix of tranquil woodlands, rocky highlands, scenic meadows, pristine rivers and fertile valleys often brimming with fresh produce. Trails also visit charming hilltop villages such as Stanjel, Vipava, Tomaj and Padna where vibrant local hospitality awaits.
The Karst region extends between south-western Slovenia and north-eastern Italy. It is a unique area formed by the gradual erosion of limestone and dolomite rocks, resulting in an intriguing network of underground caves, imposing cliffs and distinctive tabletop plateaus. The jewel in the Karst region is the UNESCO listed Skocjan Caves system which has the largest underground canyon in Europe complete with underground waterfalls as well as giant stalactites and stalacmites.
Slovenia’s wine region lies in lush valleys between the mighty Karst ridges. The rich soil in valleys such as Vipava Valley has led to a thriving agricultural community. There are many delights on offer including quality wine, fruit, olives, prosciutto, truffles, cheese and honey. Hikers can opt for farm accommodation along the way, thus maximising the local culinary experience.
Coastal trails celebrate the stunning Slovene Riviera located in the northern part of the Istrian Peninsula. Here you will find beautiful beaches and nature reserves such as the Secovlje Salina Nature Park and the Strunjan Nature Reserve. Colourful and lively seaside towns punctuate the coastline. The medieval port towns of Piran and Koper are particular highlights and feature historic Venetian architecture.
