Great Otway National Park and the Surf Coast
The attraction of walking in the Great Otway National Park and on the Surf Coast
This magnificent region follows the spectacular Victorian coastline from Torquay in the east to Princetown in the west. It covers vast tracts of the Otway Ranges that rise so unexpectedly from the plains of the Western District before plunging dramatically into the ocean. Its coastal fringe boasts wild cliff-tops, isolated postcard beaches and striking rock formations.
The Great Otway National Park is the setting for the Great Ocean Road, Victoria’s most popular regional destination. The popularity of the Great Ocean Road stems from its awesome coastal views and wending route through the deep, tall forests of the National Park. It’s hard not to be silenced by the stands of mountain ash, messmate and mountain grey gum.
The Great Otway National Park is located in southern Victoria, 160km south-west of Melbourne. It’s a large National Park, covering some 103,000 hectares. At its western end, the park runs into the Port Campbell National Park that houses the famous Twelve Apostles.
The holiday resort towns of Lorne, Apollo Bay and Port Campbell are the main, and best-located, entry points for the National Park. Each of these towns has a wide range of accommodation and all necessary amenities. Being holiday destinations, they offer a range of holiday experiences.
