Fraser Island

The attraction of walking on Fraser Island

Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island and consists entirely of sand. It is also home to over 40 perched, crystal clear, freshwater lakes which are formed in sand dunes when organic matter cements with sand to make an impenetrable lake base. Such unique lakes are dependant upon rainfall for the maintenance of their water levels. Covering 190 hectares, Lake Boomanjin is the largest perched lake in the world. With its turquoise waters and white sandy shores, Lake McKenzie wins the most photogenic prize. Little wonder that Fraser Island has attained World Heritage protected status.

Despite its sand base, the island supports a variety of vegetation including lush rainforests, rare cycads, giant satinays, tallow wood trees, mangroves, heathlands and vine forests. A particular highlight is the Valley of Giants with its massive rainforest trees and their huge buttressed roots. Amongst the giant sand dunes not to be missed are the Wongi, Hammerstone and Badjala Sandblows.

Although Fraser Island is a popular holiday destination, much of the walking on the island is remote. There is abundant wildlife including over 240 bird species, wallabies, dolphins and whales. There is a limited variety of accommodation on the island ranging from resorts to campsites.
