The southwest of France features the fairytale landscape of the Dordogne Valley. There are more than 1,500 castles in the Dordogne, many of which are steeped in history and legend. Another allure of this region are the many medieval villages and fortified strongholds built out of the local limestone, some of which perch atop dramatic cliffs and rocky hillsides. Many of the sleepy hamlets and small country towns are included in the list of “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France” (France’s most beautiful villages).
Low level walking is on offer along well-marked paths beside the winding Dordogne River which divides the Dordogne Valley into two. The picturesque valley also features lush green meadows, tranquil woodlands and colourful heathlands. Aside from the bucolic scenery, the Dordogne Valley is renowned for its traditional markets, fine gastronomy and excellent wines. Local delicacies include pate de fois gras, duck, truffles, honey and walnuts (the latter being turned into a multitude of products).
