Given the diversity of its rugged landscape and its multiple “Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty”, it’s not surprising that walking is one of the most popular leisure activities in Cornwall.
Walkers have long been drawn by the stunning beauty and epic challenge of Cornwall’s 700 kilometres of coastline, all of which is covered by the South West Coast Path. The South West Coast Path is the longest of the UK’s National Trails and features spectacular coastal views, intriguing coves, attractive beaches, dramatic stone formations and quaint seaside villages.
In addition to the South West Coast Path, Cornwall is blessed with hundreds of kilometres of other footpaths that criss-cross the county and highlight its woodlands, extensive moorlands and historical monuments.
Neighbouring Devon is another perfect place to explore on foot. Aside from the the South West Coast Path which runs across Devon’s north and south coasts, there are the magnificent Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks to discover. The Jurassic coastline is a particularly fascinating area with its stunning cliffs, beaches packed with fossils, lively coastal villages and eateries.
The combination of dramatic coastlines, breathtaking beaches and brooding moorlands have inspired countless writers and artists. It has also made Cornwall and Devon popular locations for film and television. Amongst the more recent films set in the South West are - My Cousin Rachel, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, The War Horse and About Time.The television list is also endless and includes Doc Martin, Poldark, Delicious, Agatha Christie as well as Hornblower.

Without doubt, the South West Coast Path is the big-name multi-day walk in Cornwall and Devon. Most people experience the South West Coast Path through carefully selected portions. The path is easily accessed at many points, so there’s an endless array of portions you can choose from.
People have their favourite sections, but there’s no “best section” because that depends on what you like. Fossil beaches, cliff-top walking, fishing villages, historic towns, film locations, remote regions, beach resorts…the list goes on.
The section of the South West Coast Path that loops around the far south-west point of Cornwall takes about five days and always wins plaudits.
