Causeway Coast
The Causeway Coast, on the northern coast of Northern Ireland, is often referred to as the jewel in Northern Ireland’s crown. In fact, Belfast and the Causeway Coast were voted as the number one region to visit in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel Awards 2018. Here, walkers can enjoy a seascape comprising rugged cliffs, dramatic offshore rock formations, sandy beaches, smugglers’ caves and secluded bays.
This spectacular region features numerous natural and historic landmarks. The star of the show is the Giant’s Causeway which is truly deserving of its UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Nothing quite prepares you for the sight of 40,000 hexagonal basalt columns which were created during a period of intense volcanic activity 60 million years ago. Other highlights include the romantic and well-preserved ruins of Dunluce Castle as well as the popular Carrick-a-rede swing rope bridge.
It’s little wonder that the Causeway Coast has served as a popular filming location. Most recently, it has provided a number of locations for the Game of Thrones television series, including Larrybane Head (Storm’s End), Cushenden Caves (the Stormlands) and Ballintoy Harbour (Lordsport).
Over the years, many writers have been inspired by this wild coastline. One vivid example is provided by C.S. Lewis whose novel “The Chronicles of Narnia” were inspired by Dunluce Castle and its dramatic surrounds.
The Causeway Coast offers many day and multi-day walks and there are a number of tour operators offering a variety of walking trips.
One of the best known multi-day walks in the Causeway Coast area is the Causeway Coast Way, a 51 kilometre coastal walk between the towns of Ballycastle and Portstewart.
However, there are other multi-day walks in the area and the walking tour operators have crafted many different walking itineraries. We can help you choose a walk and an operator that best suits your needs.
