Carnarvon National Park

The attraction of walking in Carnarvon National Park

For those seeking remote and awe-inspiring scenery, the long trip to Carnarvon National Park is worth the effort. Located 600km northwest of Brisbane, the drive takes between 9 and 10 hours. Set deep in Queensland’s Central Highlands, the park features the area’s highest elevation plateau, towering sandstone cliffs, moss encrusted gorges, aboriginal cave art and sweeping tablelands.

The jewel in the crown is Carnarvon Gorge which is a breathtaking sandstone gorge system with a prehistoric atmosphere. The stunning rock formations are punctuated by lush vegetation including cabbage palm trees, rainforest, rare king ferns, eucalypts, mosses and vines. Highlights include the Ampitheatre, Ward’s Canyon, the Art Gallery, the Moss Gardens and Boolimba Bluff.

Aboriginal rangers at the park are on hand to explain the cultural significance of the gorge area.

There are various campsites and private accommodation options within the park. The closest towns are Rolleston and Injune. The town of Roma provides a convenient airport access point for the gorge.
