12 June 2023 - the end and the beginning
Every end involves a beginning. I know that’s trite but there’s a fair amount of truth in it. And it’s optimistic, so I like it.
My latest ending is a biggie. Today, 12 June 2023, I wrote my last emails, handed back my Amex card and laptop and brought to an end 37 years at the one commercial law firm. It’s time to move on and explore other options.
The role I’m exiting has been fulfilling and at times exciting, but I’ve also found it all-consuming. I feel in need of a change and maybe some diversification.
Today, as well as those last emails, I boarded a plane to London. Dashing from work to the airport to embark on a holiday, is a practice of leave constrained workers. Why would I be continuing that practice?
Because the European hiking season is well underway and if I’m going to achieve my objective I need to get going. My objective? It’s a simple one: tackle as many of Western Europe’s classic multi-day walks as I can manage over a four month period.
So, today is the beginning of a European hiking adventure and all the delicious uncertainties of a life less tethered.
