Albany Region

The attraction of walking in the Albany region

The historic town of Albany lies on the southwestern Rainbow Coast of Western Australia, 415km south of Perth. This isolated coastline is known as the Rainbow Coast due to the prevalence of rainbows in this region - whether it be in sunrises, morning mists, ocean sprays or sunsets.

The Albany region is famous for its pristine beaches which are arguably the best in Western Australia. Middleton Beach is a popular family swimming beach whilst Little Beach is a particularly beautiful cove featuring dazzling turquoise waters, pure white sands and larger waves.

There are several national parks near Albany. The Torndirrup National Park is a particular favourite as it showcases spectacular rock formations which have been carved by the Southern Ocean waves. These include the Natural Bridge, the Gap and the Blowholes.

Nearby West Cape Howe National Park contains a section of one of the world’s great long distance walking trails, the Bibbulmun Track. This famous track stretches almost 1000 kilometres between Albany in the south and Kalamunda in the north (on the outskirts of Perth).

The walk offers a unique mix of forest treetops and coastal clifftops. There are many highlights including the Valley of the Giants tingle tree forest, the famous suspended Tree Tops Walk, the ocean-sculpted Elephant Rocks, the Monkey Rock lookout, the Greens Pool protected swimming lagoon and the weather-beaten Conspicuous Cliffs.

Aside from the many natural attractions of the region, there are a multitude of food, craft beer and wine producers for visitors to explore. There is also a wealth of history and historical buildings to learn about and visit in the town of Albany. Albany’s rich history dates back to the original Noongar inhabitants and also includes being the oldest colonial settlement in Western Australia. The town later served as the central departure point for ANZAC soldiers during World War One. Consequently, there are many fascinating museums in Albany including the world-class displays at the National ANZAC Centre.
