Abel Tasman National Park

The attraction of walking in the Abel Tasman National Park

The Abel Tasman National Park is located at the top of the south island. It’s New Zealand’s smallest national park (at 22,350 hectares), but, particularly in the summer months, one of the most popular. Its popularity is largely attributable to the many bays, inlets and estuaries that make up its coastline and the islands lying just off the coast. The coast and islands host wonderful, protected golden sand beaches.

The national park is home to the Abel Tasman Coast Track, one of the 9 multi-day walks that the New Zealand government markets as ‘New Zealand Great Walks’. The Abel Tasman Coast Track is the most popular of the great walks, largely because it is the easiest of the great walks, it enjoys mild weather throughout the year, it has many campsites and its beaches are very enticing.

The Abel Tasman Coast Track is 60 km long. It’s a well formed track and easy to follow. A number of tour operators offer guided and self-guided options. Some of those cover the southern two-thirds of the track, meaning a shorter total walking distance of about 42 km.
